PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SCAM!

Posted 6/3/2009

It's important to be aware of scam practices and know what you can do to help protect yourself.

Typical Scam Practices:
Many fraudsters will either be using vishing or phishing scams to trick cardholders into providing information:
  • Vishing is the criminal practice of using social engineering and Voice IP telephone services to gain access to private, personal and financial information.
  • Phishing is the criminal practice of sending emails to cardholders to ask them to click on a link in an email and validate or confirm personal or banking information. In March alone, the RSA Anti-Fraud Command Center reported that credit unions were the target of more than one-fifth of phishing attacks recorded against American financial institutions.
Fraud Prevention Tips:
It isn't always easy to recognize if a phone call or email is a scam. It's important that if you have any doubt or suspicion at all, that you should contact Community 1st Credit Union immediately.

Most fraudsters will usually ask members to validate personal information over the phone or via email - information that financial institutions already have and would never ask for over the phone or via email. Never give out the following information to someone over the phone or in an email:
  • Account number
  • Social security number
  • Card Expiration date
  • CVV2/CVC2 security code on the back of their card
If you have been victim to a scam:
If you should fall victim to a scam, call the customer service number located on the back of your card to shut down the card immediately. Also, report it to your local police authorities, as well as contacting C1st. We may be able to report the scam to the following agencies designed to help against electronic crime:
